1884, Detroit. Hamilton Carhartt wanted to design uniforms worthy of the name, in contrast to the standards of the time based on intense productivity before the worker's comfort. His meeting with a railway engineer inspired him to design the first garment specifically for railway workers, a comfortable and robust uniform. With only 4 sewing machines and 5 employees, this determined visionary launched his first overalls and work jackets cut from pure cotton duck.
It was at the beginning of the 20th century that the brand became very successful. It also played an important role during the First World War, dressing workers at the front. The company experienced problems during the Great Depression, but recovered with the arrival of Carhartt WIP... Carhartt is workwear. Carhartt WIP is fashion and ready-to-wear.
